Verizon announced Tuesday that it will roll out a new managed networking suite of services designed to help deliver enterprise cloud networking to its customers; WAN networking that performs like a nimble, private IP-address LAN.
The new services are developed from Cisco’s latest Intelligent Wide Area Networking (IWAN) solution. IWAN offers customers a hybrid networking platform, a combination of in-house physical network appliances with cloud services for optimizing WAN performance. IWAN is the result of an emerging technology called Software Defined Network (SDN).
SDN meets the increasing challenges that big data, social media and other network-intensive services pose to datacenters by “revolutionizing datacenters by providing a flexible way to control the network so it can function more like the virtualized versions of compute and storage today,” according to this article by SDX Central.
Verizon is targeting its new solution to enterprises looking for ways to optimize their networks to handle the increasing amount of traffic in the typical enterprise datacenter.
“With Verizon’s Managed SD-WAN [Software Defined Wide Area Network] solution, enterprises essentially get the best of both worlds — public and private IP,” Shawn Hakl, vice president of enterprise networking and innovation, Verizon, said.
The Verizon/Cisco solution is designed to:
- Deliver a better user experience through integrated application optimization for improved and faster application performance.
- Secure both the infrastructure and applications through robust and certified routing platforms.
- Deliver a low operational cost by fully leveraging both MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) and the Internet using full path control.
- Provide IT agility through faster provisioning of new sites and services with a hybrid WAN.
“Enterprises are challenged with managing a massive amount of traffic created by the expanding number of mobile users using cloud-based services and applications,” said Hakl. “This makes a software-defined WAN the ideal choice for supporting increased traffic demands, especially as more network traffic originates from and is destined for the Internet.”
Cisco’s IWAN is built particularly to handle mobile device, cloud apps and video traffic. It uses intelligent caching from Akamai to help apps run faster and to offload 50 to 90 percent of a customer’s network traffic. Additionally, IWAN offers visibility into traffic running across the network and the ability to automatically direct that traffic along the best available path.
